It is the fifth Freemasons Lodge to be constituted in Cannanore; all 4 previous Lodge were under the English Constitution and the early ones were purely Military Lodges. Lodge Kerala, Calicut was sponsored by Lodge Western Star No. 1049 of Cannanore. W.Bro. Dewan Bahadur Kunhiraman of Cannanore was one of the Officers in the consecrating team.
The Lodge was the result of the zeal and enthusiasm of one departed brother late V.W.Bro. K. Balakrishnan Nair without whose undying dedication and unrelenting determination it would have long remained an uncherished dream. |

In short it was conceived in his heart, devised in his head and executed by his worthy hands. In his efforts he was ably encouraged and assisted by W.Bro. P. Padmanabhan Nair, W.Bro. J.H. Williams and W.Bro. Hon’ble Justice E.K. Moidu all of whom have been called to the Grand Lodge Above.
During the early months of 1977 an idea sprouted in the minds of W.Bro. K. Balakrishnan Nair that Cannanore should have a Masonic Lodge. With the purpose in view he immediately started the preparation by initiating about half a dozen young men into Freemasonry at Lodge Trichur No. 180, of which he was then the Worshipful Master. W.Bro. J.H. Williams and W.Bro. P. Padmanabhan Nair encouraged and supported him in all ways possible. A petition for the formation of a New Masonic Lodge in Cannanore was submitted to the Grand Lodge of India signed by 27 worthy members and they were W.Bro. K. Balakrishnan Nair, W.Bro. P. The Lodge progressed in a flurry under the great task Master, the founder and the W. Master of the Lodge W.Bro. K. Balakrishnan Nair. In the beginnings the Lodge met at the mother Lodge Trichur No. 180 and then in Lodge Kerala No.2188 (E.C.), Calicut.
On December 31, 1978 the foundation stone for the construction of Lodge Cannanore No.234 was laid by the then M.W. The Grand Master of The Grand Lodge of India, M.W.Bro. Hon’ble Justice D.P. In the efforts of building the temple some important names have to be mentioned for the sake of the futurity. W.Bro. Harishankar Pockyarath (PHOTOGRAPH) donated the land for the Lodge in the heart of this small town. The lodge building then named after his father W.Bro. Late Dr. Thayll Damodaran Nair (PHOTOGRAPH), Member of Orient Lodge No. 3703, Nairobi. W.Bro. P.K. Mohamed and W.Bro. K.P. Kamaluddin for their help, they can be rightfully honoured as the great two pillars of this Lodge, many of the present convenience of this Lodge would not have materialised. And the name and fame of W.Bro. Hon’ble Justice E.K. Moidu contributed to the construction and influence of this Lodge in great measure. His efforts went a long way in motivating the cooperation and efforts of the brethren.
This Masonic Building is home for Masonic related organisation such as the Mark Master Masons, Holy Royal Arch Chapter and Royal Ark Mariners Lodges. The Masonic Hall has a beautiful air-conditioned chequered wooden floored temple, was considered the best temple at that time to seat 75 people, a lobby, anteroom, robing room, caretaker’s room and a roofed terrace to hold large gatherings. |
